It's always a good sign when a past member rejoins the band. Mark Kirkpatrick, a serving soldier left the band due to operational commitments in July 2008. Always a very active member of the band during his last "tour", it's great that he's chosen to rejoin our ranks.
Needless to say, we kitted him out toutes suite so that he can parade with the band at Royal British Legion Lister House in Ripon on the 18th July.
Welcome back!! |

NE England Trio Competitions 2010 |
|
The band was narrowly pipped at the post by Morpeth Pipe Band from an entry of 12 Trio's which included entries from Houghton Le Spring, Ampleforth College and Beverley & District Pipe Bands. A brilliant result for Campbell Barlow and Aimie Fawcett, two of our youngest pipers. Each trio played the RSPBA MAPS set with a slight twist at the end....
Next up is the Branch mini-bands, quartets and drumming solos in May. Hopefully we can add to our trophy cabinet in addition to successfully defending our first and third places from last years quartets.
We'd also like to improve on our 4th Place in the mini-bands. No pressure then...... |

Looking forward to a new season 2010 |
|
Well, 2010 is upon us and the band is looking to build upon its successes in 2009 which culminated in the annual Chief Fire Officers Carol Concert in Harrogate. The band performed well and was complimented on its profession approach when playing alongside West Yorkshire's Military Band and The Harrogate Brass Band. The diary is already starting to fill up and we will be starting our competition season at the North East England Branch RSPBA Indoor Competitions on 20th March 2010 at Sunningdale School. Sunderland.
In the close season we've attracted several new members to the band ranks in particular the drum corps. Another couple of side drums to be added to the shopping list!!!
Onwards and upwards as they say.... |

Christmas Carol Concert 2009 |
|
The Band has been invited to perform at the Christmas Carol Concert held by the Chief Fire Officer every year. This year the concert will be hosted at the International Conference Centre Harrogate on Sunday 20th December 2009. All proceeds are in aid of the Firefighter Charity.
Along with the normal display pieces we use, we will be accompanied by West Yorkshire Fire Service Military Band in a rendition of "Le Baum". The finale also includes the old favourite "Highland Cathedral" performed by The Harrogate Band, The West Yorkshire Military Band and ourselves.
For further details on how to obtain tickets for this very worthwhile cause, please follow this link to the HIC website. |
The band added to it's haul of trophies during it's recent outing at the RSPBA North East England Branch indoor competitions held at Sunningdale School, Sunderland on the 25th April 2009. The band picked up a commendable 4th in the Mini Band competition but the highlight of the day was taking 1st Place in the Quartets with Quartet 1. The band played 4/4 marches "Early Morning, Music of Spey, Battle of Killiecrankie, Bonny Lass of Fyvie" for the mini-band competition which was probably our downfall that led to only achieving 4th place. Technically, the performance was reasonably OK but I think we finally learned the lesson today that 4/4 marches are not the best tunes for our band to play at competition.
On the other hand, we used our MAPS set of Correchoilies, Teribus, Pipers Cave with the addition of a special arrangement of The High Road to Gareloch in the Quartets. What a difference! The band took first and fourth place and we think the different ending to High Road may have helped swing it for us as the adjudicator comment of "Oo' er Missus, what a fine ending" probably suggests!!!
Onwards and Upwards!!
